Heaven in the
Hills Welcome to Dunsavage Farm, an urban escape-hatch nestled on a 23-acre hill (yes, there are hills in East Texas!). The picturesque two-story home overlooks a shimmering lake (not for fishing or swimming), an everchanging canvas of wildlife and wildflowers, drifts of sleepy cattle, thick hardwood and pine forests wreathed in morning mist, and a seven mile vista, wondrous to behold. You can rock peacefully on the grand porch, watch the mockingbirds dip and dive ... pull a chair out at night to be engulfed by an eternity of stars as far as your eyes can see ... or join your hostess on the back porch for a spectacular sunset behind the "Indian tree" on the highest hill in Baxter. The atmospheric show house is filled with antiques, two fireplaces, original Texas art, a library of books for borrowing, and good music. All rooms feature breathtaking views and private baths, including the master bedroom with sunken tub. Dunsavage Farms has drawn rave reviews from The Dallas Morning News and Southern Living. No wonder. It was the original home of the New York, Texas, Cheesecake, which won the Chef's Gold Medal Award and other national awards as one of the best desserts in the country. Although the cheesecake is no longer made at Dunsavage Farms, you can still acquire it in a shop just north off the Athens' square at the New York, Texas, Cheesecake Shop. The huge gourmet country breakfast is legendary, as is the hospitality, which offers a glass of Texas wine and other goodies upon your arrival. Your hostesses are writer Lyn Dunsavage and/or legendary television anchor Judy Jordan. You can sleep as late as you wish (breakfast is prepared for your schedule), eat until you can't anymore, and/or check out late, unless other guests have reserved your room. If you want to completely get away, Dunsavage Farms is an incredible place to contemplate where you're going.
